Vagina Monologues
Show Details
Actress, playwright, and political activist Eve Ensler was talking with a friend who was going through menopause in the 1990s when she was first struck by the way women spoke about their bodies, which she believed was a reflection of how they felt about themselves and their gender. Ensler was inspired to write a series of essays on women, their bodies, and the language they used to communicate about themselves which she adapted into a performance piece she called The Vagina Monologues. Opening at a tiny off-off-Broadway theatre, The Vagina Monologues soon became a hit in New York City, which spread around the world, becoming an international phenomenon.
The Vagina Monologues are done every year by DCU Drama and are a very intimate event where girls can show off their acting skills. You do not have to be a serious actress as there are plenty of funny monologues to learn! If you have a very tight timetable in college then the monologues are perfect for you. The monologues are given out after a day of auditions and it is up to you to learn them yourself. You will then meet with the producer a week before the show and perform what you have done. Other than that you learn the piece in your own time and there is little to no rehearsal schedule to adhere to! So if your course is hectic but you want to be involved this might just be the play for you.
The monologues will be held in March in the Space in the Helix and all proceeds go to Women's charities. Watch your mails in semester 2 for more details.
