About Us

DCU Drama is one of DCU's longest-running and most successful societies. The exact origins of the society are now lost in the mists of time, but we've been active since at least the late 1980's, way back when DCU was NIHE Dublin! (The 1980's? What's that, Grandad?)

Our mission is simple; to provide entertainment for the whole of DCU and beyond through any means necessary (though somewhat drama-related) and to make sure everyone has a ball doing it. Whether you're a diehard stage veteran or a casually interested rookie (or anywhere in between), DCU Drama has something to interest you!

There's a little something for everyone in DCU Drama! Serious thespians (we said THESPIANS) will be right at home with our Shakespearean productions - previous shows include "Macbeth" (2005), "The Merchant of Venice" (2006), "King Lear" (2007) and "Romeo & Juliet" (2008). Or if the "Henceforth and Anon" malarkey is just a little too much for you, you can try some of our more contemporary fare - in the past we've done everything from Greek Tragedy ("Antigone" 2003) to Arthur Miller ("All My Sons, 2006) to our sell-out productions of "The Vagina Monologues" (2007 and 2008).

Reckon you're better than old "Bill" Shakespeare or "Arty" Miller? (Hey, when you know them as well as we do, you can call them by their nicknames...) Why not prove it! We always strive to put on as many student-written pieces each year as possible, including "Iago" (2007), "The Woods" (2008) and "If This Is The Afterlife, I Want My Old Job Back" (2006). Think you can come up with a full length play or musical or even a one-act play or skit, then put pen to paper and get cracking!

But it's not all DRAMA . Fancy something a little lighter? The annual Panto, since its resurrection in 2005, has gone from strength to strength; shows like "Babez In Da Hood" (2005), "Back To Neverland" (2006) and "Aladdin" (2007) have cemented their places in DCU Drama history, doling out a recommended dosage of utter randomness and cheesy singalongs! and if it's singing you're into, you'll love our annual "Stars In Their Eyes" competition, Variety Show and of course, the annual DCU Musical. The musical, held in The Helix each year, is one of the highlights of the DCU calendar and easily our biggest and most extravagant production. Recent triumphs include "The Full Monty" (2007), "Fame!" (2008) and "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" (2004).

Fancy meeting people from other colleges? No sweat. Each year, we participate in the ISDA (Irish Student Drama Association) Festival, Ireland's biggest intervarsity drama festival. We also take part in the annual One Act Wonder Festival in association with St. Pat's, Mater Dei and DIT; these festivals and more are inevitably great fun and an excellent opportunity to hang out with students from other colleges.

Got stage-fright? No problem. No production happens without a dedicated backstage and promotions crew, y'know. Every year, we offer technical workshops in lighting, sound and production for those who would rather stay behind the spotlight! Design a costume, produce or direct a show, design posters or sell tickets, you name it, we need you for it!

So, where has all this gotten us, you might ask? Well, DCU Drama are officially the most decorated university society in Ireland. The Board of Irish College Societies has held its annual National Awards every year since 1996, rewarding Ireland's best college societies for their hard work throughout the year. DCU Drama remain the only society to have won the Best Society Award more than once; in fact we've won it THREE times! Twice in a row in 2001/02 and 2002/03 and again in 2007/08! Blimey. Add that to a bevy of awards and nominations at the Annual DCU Clubs & Socs Awards, the ISDAs and the One Act Wonder Festival, we're up to here in accolades ...which is nice, but certainly not what we're all about. DCU Drama is all about YOU, the members. If you're having a good time, enjoying yourself and meeting new and interesting people, then that's our job done. If you learnt a little something along the way, even better. So if you're about DCU and fancy getting involved, simply pop into the Clubs & Socs Office upstairs in the HUB or visit our stand on Clubs & Socs Days to find out what we can do for you!
